London Assembly consults on rail embankments
The London Assembly is carrying out an investigation on the cutting back of trees and vegetation from rail embankments by the rail authorities. Is this being managed properly? The GLA would like your views:
Dear Sir/Madam,
What is happening to your local railway embankments?
The vegetation that grows alongside London’s hundreds of miles of surface railway lines is home to animals, birds and insects. These ‘wildlife corridors’ can also improve the appearance of a local area, plus screen out noise and pollution.
However, the London Wildlife Trust has warned that management of these embankments can be controversial because of the scale of vegetation cut back, the timing of work and the level of public consultation.
Darren Johnson, Deputy Chair of the London Assembly’s Environment Committee, is leading a review on behalf of the London Assembly’s Environment Committee to look at how railway embankments are currently being managed across the capital.
You can read more about the investigation at this link: http://www.london.gov.uk/who-runs-london/the-london-assembly/assembly_investigation/railway-embankments
As part of the review, we would like to know what you think about the management of local railway embankments, levels of consultation around proposed maintenance works and how you want these habitats to be looked after. Are you being consulted about how these railway embankments are being cut back? Are you concerned about the animals, birds and insects that live in these habitats? How do you think they should be managed? You can share your thoughts with us (if possible by the end of September) by email at environmentcommittee@london.gov.uk, phone 020 7983 4510; or by writing to London Assembly Environment Committee, PP10, FREEPOST LON15799, City Hall, The Queen’s Walk, London, SE1 2BR.
We look forward to hearing from you.
