The Centenary Company presents Iolanthe
The Centenary Company presents Iolanthe by Gilbert & Sullivan Wednesday 26 – Saturday 29th March at Greenwich Theatre, Crooms Hill SE10 8ES Wednesday – Friday at 7.30pm Saturday at 2pm and 6pm
Back at Greenwich for an eighth year, the Centenary Company, a locally based performance company accompanied by a 13-piece orchestra, give performances of one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s favourite operas.
Iolanthe is about a fairy banished from Fairyland for life for marrying a mortal. Gilbert’s incisive witty political satire is as relevant today as it was when Iolanthe was first performed in 1882 and many consider the Iolanthe music among the best of Sullivan’s work. In this “fairy opera”, the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective, privileged and dim-witted. The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire.
