Three bidders shortlisted to take over Sydenham Library

The community interest event at Lewisham Town Hall held on the 12 April, unveiled three groups who aim to run a community library at Sydenham.

The three groups are:

1. We Think . Led by Lewisham Community Sports not-for-profit group and brainchild of businessman Toby Chambers. Aimed at attracting younger users with paid for sessions of dancing, writing, birthday parties, and other activities. The number of books in the library will be halved approximately.

2. Omega. Part of the New Testament of God. Promise increased opening hours and same number of books. Offering mentoring, back-to-work training and music. No clear idea of funding

3. Eco Computers. Currently run Pepys Resources Centre in Deptford. Promise increased opening hours and retention of practically all book stock. Funded by computer recycling, grants from UK Online, from local housing associations plus computer training. Would employ a full-time library manager.

Officers now intend to select an appropriate company who will start running the library at the end of May.
