Old Clock House in Beckenham Place Park badly damaged by fire
Part of the main Homesteads Block (the site of the distinctive clock house and weathervane) in Beckenham Place Park caught fire at around 1.30pm on Saturday July 2. By 2pm the fire was raging uncontrollably with flames leaping 40-50ft above the building – despite efforts from the fire brigade to bring the fire under control. Our main photograph (courtesy of David Hansom, Chair of the Friends of Beckenham Place Park) shows the main building on fire at around 2pm.
By around 4pm the fire had been largely brought under control but the middle roof had almost completely collapsed.
The Beckenham Place Community Trust has been liaising with Lewisham Council to restore the buildings and bring them into community use. Ironically, a site visit with Lewisham Officers had taken place just two weeks before the fire.
Our thanks to David Hansom, who is also Chair of the Beckenham Place Working Committee for this information.
