Summer nature events for kids at Horniman Gardens

Nature Explorers

  • Thursdays 18, 25 August; Thursday 1 September
  • 11.30am–12.30pm, 1.45–2.45pm and 3.15–4.15pm
  • £2 per child, adults free. Purchase ticket from Information Desk on day.

Explore and discover the natural environment with activities and games in the Gardens, Wildlife Garden and Nature Trail. Please note that indoor sessions will run in the event of very wet weather. More information about individual sessions will be available shortly.

For families with children aged 3+.

Pond Dipping at the Horniman

  • Every Monday, Tuesdays and Friday from 25 July – 2 September
  • 11.15am – 2.30pm
  • Nature Trail
  • Free. Drop in.

Try your hand at pond-dipping in the Horniman Nature Trail pond this summer. You will find a summer environment bursting with life. Equipment and guidance are provided. This event will take place if the water levels in the pond are acceptable.

Please note: The Nature Trail is accessed via steps and is approximately one mile round, a walk away from the museum buildings. There are no facilities on or immediately near the trail.

Everyone is welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. We strongly recommend children should be aged 3+.

Nature Trail Discovery

  • Wednesdays 17, 31 August
  • 2–3.30pm
  • Nature Trail
  • Free admission. Passes are available from the Information Desk area 30 minutes before the session.

Join Jim Murphy from the Trust for Urban Ecology to discover a summer environment bursting with insects, animals, birds, trees, plants and amphibians. The Nature Trail is carefully managed to encourage wildlife and includes pond, meadow and log pile habitats. Access to the Nature Trail is stepped.

Everyone welcome. Children must be aged 3+.

Family Art Fun on the Nature Trail

  • Every Friday from 29 July – 2 September
  • 11am – 2pm

  • Free admission. Drop in

Get crafty with a variety of activities inspired by our Nature Trail, then try your hand at pond-dipping on our pond platform, if water levels in the pond are acceptable. The Nature Trail is carefully managed to encourage wildlife and includes pond, meadow and log pile habitats.

Falconry Flight Display

  • Wednesday 17 August
  • 2 – 2.45pm and 3.15 – 4pm
  • Gardens
  • Free, drop in.

Join Ray and Wendy Aliker of Ye Olde Redtail Falconry for a thrilling live falconry display that showcases some of the most amazing birds of prey.  This is a chance to see these magnificent birds at their most exciting, up close.

Everyone is welcome and the display is suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Please don’t bring dogs to the event.
