Containing one of the most memorable opening scenes in cinema history, Hal Ashby’s cult classic is a must-see for anyone who likes their comedy dark.
Harold Chasen is young, rich, and obsessed with death — he fakes suicides and attends strangers’ funerals. Much to the dismay of his socialite mother, he also insists on driving a hearse around their wealthy suburban neighbourhood.
While his mother busies herself trying to find Harold a suitable wife, he finds his own match in Maude: a lively 79-year-old he meets at a funeral.
What follows is a life-affirming and darkly comic exploration of life, love and loss. Once seen it is never forgotten — make sure you join us to enjoy one of your old favourites, or discover a new one.
★★★★★ Fans still argue about its meaning today; but whether it’s an attack on the emptiness of Vietnam-era nihilism or a fable celebrating the gift of life, it hasn’t lost its power to challenge and charm in 40 years. Jane Graham, The Guardian★★★★★
