NO to demolition of the Bell Green gas holders!

Why are we against an Aldi supermarket?

  • Large shops should be located in high streets – the current planning application does not meet national or local objectives for town centres.
  • If the scheme gets the go ahead there will be a massive increase in traffic and pollution – in an  already polluted area close to houses, flats, schools and day nurseries.
  • The gas holders should be celebrated and preserved – they represent the rich heritage of lower Sydenham. They should be incorporated into an imaginative residential scheme (as at King’s Cross) and not demolished.

When people are desperate for housing, building yet another out-of-town supermarket at Bell Green is crazy. If Aldi want a new store, why not move into the vacant Budgens store in Sydenham or take up one of the retail spots when Catford is redeveloped in the near future?
