Death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Dear Resident

It’s been a week since Buckingham Palace announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, services and memorials have been held across the country, including here in Lewisham.

Earlier this week on Sunday, a local proclamation of the accession of King Charles III was held outside the Civic Suite in Catford. This ancient ceremony was held in councils across the country with the Union Flag briefly flown at full mast to welcome the new King, before being lowered again until after the Queen’s funeral.

This Sunday 18 September at 5pm we will be supporting the Lewisham Thanksgiving Service which will be held at St Mary’s the Virgin Church in Lewisham. This is a Christian service but is open to all. If you are interested in coming along, please reserve your spot here. Space is limited. There will also be other smaller services at Lewisham Sivan Temple on Friday 16 September at 11am and Catford and Bromley Synagogue on Sunday 18 September at 2pm.

I know that many people will want to pay their respects and share their own personal memories, so the Council’s Books of Condolence will remain open at the Civic Suite in Catford, Deptford Lounge and Downham Library until Tuesday 20 September. You can read more details below. There will also be a National Moment of Reflection that will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September, the night before the State Funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence. You can read more about that here.
