Improvements to Mayow Road/Sydenham Road Junction
Work will start shortly on improvements to the junction of Mayow Road/Sydenham Road.
The Sydenham Society were able to meet on site with local councillors and the Council’s Design Manager from Highways and Transport.
We were able to iron out all of the final details of the scheme which will improve traffic movements and pedestrian safety around the junction.
Here are the main proposed changes to this junction:
- Better road signs including those marking directions to the Girton Road Car Park
- Extended raised platforms for the central traffic lights at the junction (barely a few weeks go by without the lights being knocked down by passing traffic)
- Replanting of the tree outside Blossom and Threads on the corner of Mayow Road which was broken in half in a traffic collision
- Building a raised platform on the pedestrian crossing close to the Poodle Club
- Changes to parking on Sydenham Road outside Lidl. On the “Lidl side” of Sydenham Road, single yellow line parking will be retained. But on the other side of the road (close to the fish and chip shop and Pizza Go Go) there will be no parking allowed. This is to prevent the regular “traffic blocks” which happen at this spot when there are vehicles parked on both sides of the road.
75 Bus Stop
One of the major changes we would like to have seen at this junction is to move the 75 bus stop close to the garage further back down Mayow Road. This would allow the 75 bus to move more easily in and out of the bus stop and at the same time help other road traffic to proceed unhindered when turning left down Sydenham Road. However, this is a great deal more difficult to solve since there simply isn’t a suitable spot to reposition the bus stop away from road junctions such as Earlsthorpe and Dukesthorpe.
Phased traffic lights
At the conclusion of this scheme, we are promised a “phased traffic lights” system along the full length of Sydenham Road. Local councillors have been asking for such a system for almost a decade, so let’s hope this can be implemented on this occasion.
The Sydenham Society believes that these changes will help to improve this section of our high street and should be supported.
