Spotlight on Sydenham Station Approach

In recent years Sydenham Station Approach has been transformed from a crowded cut-through to the station, to an attractive, pedestrian-friendly space.

In 2013 new paving and lighting was installed by Transport for London; and, in 2018, Sydenham Society volunteers painted the rear wall, and installed posters and planters with help from Arriva, the train company.

When funding for pop-up shops became available in 2014 the premises at 4 Sydenham Station Approach were given a make-over and the space was transformed into marketable premises. A few years later it’s now home to a wine merchant – one of two new businesses on the street.

New arrivals!

Kenrick’s Wine Merchant

4 Sydenham Station Approach

Wine connoisseur Kenrick has taken over the business at this location which, from 2014, had been a branch of Bob Wines.

Those with long-ish memories will remember that for many years this shop had been empty until it was given a new lease of life in 2013 when it became one of Sydenham’s “pop-up’ shops hosting, among other businesses, Bluebell Woods, purveyors of all things vintage. Kenrick, from Bordeaux, has now taken over Bobs and has expanded the range, plus creating space for regular tasting events.

Arriving in Sydenham with no money or clients, her first salon was hidden at the back of a barber’s shop, hence the name for her new business – The Outback.

Opening times are Tuesday 9am-3pm, Wednesday-Friday 9am-7pm and Saturday 9am-6pm (closed Sunday and Monday).

Local treasure, Emini at Geriola Shoe repairs, is a long-standing trader on Sydenham Station Approach.

Not only is he busy with his key-cutting and shoe repair business. Emini, together with another volunteer, also looks after the corner flower bed at the top of the road.

This space, which had been a dumping ground for litter for many years, is now a flower-filled bed which enhances the approach to Sydenham station.

Geriola’s is open from 8am-6pm Monday to Saturday
