Arguably Sydenham’s most famous former resident and one of the world’s great explorers, Ernest Shackleton’s three expeditions to the Antarctic to reach the “holy grail” of the South Pole are the stuff of legends.
On Tuesday, Antarctic exploration expert Michael Smith talks about his latest biography of the great explorer. The talk marks the centenary of the Endurance expedition in 1914, the greatest story of survival in Antarctic history and reveals that Shackleton was happiest in the icy wilderness where he could escape a messy private life.
Michael Smith’s previous books including Great Endeavour – Ireland’s Antarctic Explorers and Unsung Hero – Tom Crean about the Kerryman who was involved in all three of the classic “attempts on the Pole” led by by Robert Scott and Shackleton.
