Events for adults and kids at Mayow Park Community Garden

The attractive community garden at the rear of the pavilion in Mayow Park is running a number of events for adults who want get their hands dirty and for children to learn about gardening and nature:

Tuesdays & Thursdays – Volunteer workdays 9-3pm

Just turn up and we will show you around, take your details and get you gardening!

Please wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear. Refreshments & protective gloves will be provided.

Celebrate Burns Night – All In One 7.30pm Tuesday 25 January

The Forest Hill Society are helping to organise this always popular annual event and will provide an authentic Forest Hill Scot to address the haggis.  If you’d like to wear a kilt or recite some Burns poetry, then that would be great.

Ever since he made his debut concert at the Festival Hall at the age of 12, cellist Robert Cohen was destined for musical greatness. As a soloist, concerto-player, chamber musician, director and inspirational teacher, Robert has established himself as one of the foremost cellists of our time.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow – a sparkling and scary tale of love honour and revenge is currently running at the Brockley Jack Theatre until Saturday 8th January.

A Celebration of Friendship – a Christmas concert by the Elm Singers
Friday 3 December, 7.30pm, St Bartholomew’s Church, 2 Westwood Hill SE26 4NP
The Elm Singers invite you to an evening of beautiful music in support of Sydenham Garden with pieces by Tchaikovsky and Lauridsen, solos, duets, readings and traditional Advent carols. Entry is free but there will be a fund-raising collection in support of the garden.

Annual Advent Concert by the Bonhoeffer Recorder Consort
Saturday 4 December, 3pm at the German Church, 50 Dacres Road SE23; admission £3; all proceeds to Lewisham Voluntary Care Centre
Formerly known as the Horniman Recorders, the Bonhoeffer Recorder Consort give a concert annually around Advent. The programme will include music by: Holborne, Telemann, Bariola, Monteverdi, Weelkes, and Bach, plus a collection of medieval music arranged for recorders and various Christmas favourites. There will be a raffle for a handmade patchwork quilt and other prizes. Refreshments are donated and organised by the church members and include Gluwein and – possibly! – Black Forest cake.

Club 26 visit the Geffrye Museum – Friday 26 November

One  of London’s best-loved museums, the Geffrye is now easily accessible as it is adjacent to the new East London Line station at Hoxton.

 This Friday Club 26 takes a trip to the museum to visit the exhibition “400 years of seasonal Christmas traditions in English homes” and to have lunch in the recently refurbished cafe. For more information about the Geffrye Museum go to: www.geffrye-museum.org.uk

Over the Downs to Oxted – walk, Saturday 6th November

 A walk in wooded countryside over the North Downs to the pleasant town of Oxted, with lunch at The Old Bell (lunch deal £4.95 with a starter or dessert just £2 extra). After lunch return from Oxted station or continue for a further mile and a half past Oxted Mill to catch the train at Hurst Green station. Meet at Sydenham Station ticket office 10.10am on Saturday. 

 
The walk is approximately four miles and is almost entirely off-road using quiet well-established footpaths. There is a gentle but steady uphill slope on the first stretch before the descent down to Oxted; stout shoes essential. Please note that there are no “comfort stops”between East Croydon station and Oxted!

November the 5th – fireworks at the Palace

The first fireworks display at the park took place on July 12 1865 when two rival firework companies competed to show off their wares.  One hundred and forty five years later why not join spectators at Crystal Palace for a traditional fireworks event on the evening of the 5th November?

Half-price ticket offer for Lewisham arts and music events
