Arts Festival – Opening Weekend

It’s here again!

 

Let’s look forward to 21 days of events, entertainment and excitement in Sydenham’s sixth annual celebration of music, theatre, dance, art, film, spoken word, outdoor and family events starting with a sizzling opening weekend.

 

SATURDAY 5

SPECIAL GUEST STORYTIME – Kirkdale Bookshop 10.30am-11am. FREE

Kirkdale Bookshop’s regular Saturday morning Children’s Storytime will be welcoming some very special guests during the festival. Author of Beegu, Alexis Deacon will be reading from his new books Cheese Belongs to You and The Selfish Giant on the 5 July. The special guest on Sat 19 July is to be confirmed
LAUNCH EVENT: STREET CELEBRATION – Sydenham Road 11am-4pm FREE

Kick off SAF 2014 in style with five fantastic FREE hours of live music, dance, street performance and global food stalls – at our three performance areas: Venner Square Stage, Queensthorpe Square and ‘On the Hoof Stage’ at Station Approach. An incredible line up of music from all over the world including Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Hip hop, Folk, Pop and Classical

Half performance, half training session, the International Superhero Academy was born out of the ultimate belief that everyone is pretty Super…and also that foiling criminals’ dastardly plans is very satisfying. For trainee superheroes aged 6-9 years… It’s time to activate your Superpowers!
JULY THE ARTIST: ONE MAN SHOW ‘ON THE HOOF’  12.35pm, Station Approach Stage. FREE

Armed with abundant enthusiasm and prolific vocal abilities, Marek endeavours to deliver heartfelt, melodic world hits meshed with his own romantic pop/jazz repertoire. The Artist: One Man Show aims to provide unforgettable music feast whilst inspiring, uplifting and bringing together people from all backgrounds to support well-being and creativity

1920: Cabinet minister Lord Cecil visits Sydenham’s Gas Works to unveil its war memorial and the names of the fallen. But the ghosts of Livesey Hall just won’t lie still…An immersive musical theatre performance that will whisk you back in time, to the outbreak of WW1 at a music-hall concert in August 1914 and a fundraising fete.
SECRETS OF NATURE: SOUNDS UNSEEN ZANZIBAR NIGHTCLUB 7pm-midnight. £10 (£8conc)

Metamono play their wonderful blend  of analogue electronica matched to early 20th century silent educational films to create Secrets of Nature – Sounds Unseen, a stunning audio visual experience. They will be supported by Cauldronated, a percussive electronic trio featuring former Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow drummer Dave Barbarossa and Italian poet Eva Menon.
